Understand what “free” means

Free course

The learning materials are offered without a course fee. Check whether quizzes, feedback, and proof of completion are included.

Free preview or audit

Access may cover only selected lessons or exclude graded work. Do not assume a directory search result includes an audit option.

Paid credential

A certificate, subscription, or exam may have a separate charge. Check the exact offer and cancellation terms before entering payment details.

Provider directories

These are provider directories, not verified individual course offers. Course availability, prerequisites, time, and fees vary.

Cybersecurity career paths

Start with the problems you enjoy

Security work includes helping people, investigating incidents, managing risk, securing systems, and explaining decisions. You do not need to pick a specialty on day one.

Try a foundation course, keep a glossary, and write a short explanation of one safety improvement you made. Then explore networking and operating-system basics before advanced security tools.

A practical exploration checklist

  • Compare entry-level roles and their actual responsibilities.
  • Practice only in your own isolated lab or an explicitly authorized training environment.
  • Keep notes on what you tried, observed, and learned.
  • Before paying for certifications such as CompTIA Security+ or CEH, check current objectives, prerequisites, costs, and relevance to your target role.

Use the NIST NICE Framework Resource Center (opens in a new tab or window) to explore how cybersecurity work is described. A course or credential does not guarantee a job.
